The Complete Guide to Sony Alpha 560 and 580 DSLRs BW Edition Gary Friedman Tony Phillips 5800052680787 Books

My experience, skip if you want to go to the review: I'm a Minolta 35mm user from the 80s probably more a professional amateur. I was very good at taking pictures with a manual only camera, meaning setting the ISO shutter speed, choosing the film speed and knowing the limitations of what shots would work well and what would not through trial and error. This was when film cost $5-10 just for 24-36 shots a roll. I got some really stunning shots after experimenting with the camera and various settings. This is good advice for anyone trying out a new camera, which the book advises to do as well. I used to be a feature writer/photographer for a local community college. Although I have had a Kodak EZ share point/shoot almost a year, this is the extent of my digital camera experience! I got this book because the 580 is my first pro DSLR and I was intimidated on switching from film! Not surprisingly, I was also skeptical on switching to an auto focus/manual camera, believing that auto focus was somehow not as good as manual. Thankfully, I got over that quickly.

After reading Tim Naff's amazing review on the Sony Alpha 560/580 I got this book by Friedman & Phillips. I have had the 580 for a week now and have used this book daily to explain the various settings and also the accessories that I need. For example, they say which battery to get, suggest remotes and offer alternatives on less expensive remotes. Do research on the less expensive ones to ensure they work with the 580.

After reading the intro pages on what the mirror in an SLR does I was grateful I bought it. I understand the basic concepts and appreciate the great explanations on all aspects and possibilities of the camera and I am having fun reading it. These guys love what they do and they are funny! It was good to go back and read over the basics. I have also skipped to sections that I need to read more about. The index at the end is several pages long and very helpful.

Friedman/Phillips are professional photographers, which makes this book indispensable. I am also glad I have the hard copy of the book rather than the PDF online version. I waited 5 years to get the best DSLR on the market in my price range and these guys, who are professional photographers - love this camera. They have fun tips on traveling overseas with a digital camera and ways to get strangers comfortable while you are taking their picture.

This is a well written book with details in just the right places which makes it easier to understand the different aspects of this camera. For example, if you are a Minolta user, the interface will be familiar. I went outside to shoot the full moon solar eclipse and naturally could not see anything on the camera except the dial, so I was changing the settings to try to get to the "Scenes" display for night time shooting. Experimenting with low light conditions and settings, I switched from "Auto," to "Program," to "Scenes," and couldn't see the camera body well enough to choose the sub-program I wanted to use, which was, "Handheld Twilight Mode." I read the section on how to do this and then it all made sense. It is very similar to my film Minoltas with much better features. It is an amazing camera with features that are quite stunning so I'm glad the book is available.

If you're already familiar with these type of things in DSLRs, the book will explain the different aspects of every type of setting on the control on the dial and the entire camera. It will describe the shutter speeds and explain where the camera will focus depending on which function on the dial one uses. It is ideal for Minolta users used to the split screen inside the viewfinder (OVF) and choosing each aspect manually, or for those used to Auto Focus. It will explain what/why/how to be more in control and not depend on the Auto button on the dial so one can get more creative and use natural light. For those who are only used to film cameras (I know you're out there somewhere!) the camera is full of amazing settings that will take some getting used to and this book is perfect. It explains the several different ways the camera focuses (See Tim Naff's review of the Sony Alpha 550, which is updated to include the 560/580). For those that don't know the Minolta body controls, this book will make it easy to switch over. None of the Nikon or Cannon cameras in this price range have the LCD. I have an LCD cover on it, with bubbles and you can't tell there are bubbles when the LCD is active at all, which is what they say in the book!

The pull out LCD descriptions are spot on. The book explains options on how to take care of the LCD so it doesn't get damaged. I will use the LCD a lot (And predict you will love it, too); even though I am used to holding my old (Film) camera over my head, or low to the ground, pointing at where I want to shoot and having the shot come out perfect every time, (Yes, I wasted lots of film this way!). No wasted shots with this camera. I was filming my musician friend at a church, pulled out the LCD for an "Up shot." With all my experience of doing this, the shot wouldn't have been right without the LCD.

Amazing book, fun to read.

Glad I could get this book. It makes it all straight-forward to follow. Great reference book, it explains why you would do something and the examples and tips are great!
This is indeed an easy book to read. Several times I have thought "I don't need to read this section" but when I go ahead and read it I find many useful nuggets that I would otherwise have missed. Good job!!
THIS BOOK WAS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR...EASY STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO USE MY NEW CAMERA...THE AUTHOR EXPLAINS ALL THE BELLS & WHISTLES WHILE AT THE SAME TIME GIVING YOU SHORTCUTS TO IMMEDIATELY START TAKING PICTURES...MY ONLY REGRET IS NOT ORDERING THE COLOR EDITION AS SOME OF THE ILLUSTRATIONS NEEDED COLOR TO DEMONSTRATE WHAT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT...
